Anticipated spring tw-drama: Rock ‘n Road starring Chris Wu & Kimi Hsia

I’m pretty sure most of you are here because of the name “Chris Wu” in the title, so let’s cut straight to the case–yes, Chris Wu whom gained legions of fangirls in King Flower/Substitute Princess is back.  And yes, he does have a new hair color.  (A lot of people are making a big deal over the hair-color change..what can I say? It seems like most people are liking the new hair color! Me included.)  At first I did a double take when I saw him in the previews because it took me a minute to realize who it was, heheh.

Anyways Chris Wu plays the role of a famous music producer who ends up hitting the rock bottom of his career and is betrayed by the people he loves most.  The only one who stays by his side is, surprise surprise, the heroine (played by Kimi Hsia).  She was once a popular child star but is now only an ordinary aspiring singer.

Official synopsis translation:

“Lin Wei Zhen (Kimi Hsia) was a famous child actor but lost her popularity after she grew up. She is at a low point in her life. In contrast, legendary music producer Zhou Shu Yu (Chris Wu) is at the peak of his career. All the singers he collaborates with become famous and best selling. Wei Zhen enters Shu Yu’s world through a song. However, Shu Yu is betrayed by his girlfriend Yang Jia Xin and his partner/assistant Xu Li Da and lost everything. The trouble prone Wei Zhen was the only one who will continue the journey with Shu Yu.”

Opening Theme Song MV – You’re the Only by Mayday

Anyways, of course, both of the MV’s that were released for Rock ‘n Road so far are awesome.  This is coming from TVBS, which also had an amazing MV for its 2013 drama Dragon Gate.  At the time, the MV had gotten me so hyped up over Dragon Gate but it turned out to be a flop.  T_T””  So I am trying VERY HARD to not get my hopes up for Rock n’ Road but……..I can’t help it, the opening theme song is already so addicting!!!  I really hope that Rock n’ Road will be an improvement from Dragon Gate. >_<

Of course, the one thing I am wondering is, how much of this drama will be about music? O_O  Apparently Kimi Hsia (I don’t think I have seen her in any dramas before) is not a professional singer and neither is Chris Wu.  Was the band concept in the opening MV…just a concept?  Are the characters going to be singing in the show?  Well the drama is coming out on March 16 2014, which means that I won’t have to wait long to find out! 😉  I was also surprised to find out that it is already licensed to be subbed on Viki!  I take it that means we can watch it in ~HD~?  *W*

I am also curious about how Kimi Hsia will do as the lead actress, since I haven’t seen her in any dramas before.  So far she has a totally infectious smile in the MV’s and I think she has the charisma to be the lead.  I’m also looking forward to seeing the rest of the supporting cast since the side characters are also very fun in the MV’s/previews!

  1. I was watching one of the teasers and Kimi had this kinda annoying cutesy voice! I hope it was just for the teasers. >< I've watched her host 'Manly Chefs' and she doesn't sound like that!!!

  2. You are so right, I landed here because of the name “Chris Wu” … LOL
I am really liking this new drama and dying here because there is no reviews and people to fangirl with… 😦

  3. I did a quick review on ep1 and will do so for ep2 once I get a hand of the HD videos. I really can’t stand 480p Taiwanese dramas once I got a taste of what’s HD 720p/1080p looks like. Anyways, Kimi Hsia is great is Kiss Me, Mom! She’s really better at serious/emotional scenes but when it’s bubbly, it’s a bit too much but I feel it’s partly the director’s fault for allowing her to act that way, HAHAHA! She’s much better than that.

    • I agree, her hyper bubbly-ness is overdone in ep1. I think her smile alone is enough to convey how happy go lucky she is..there is no need to overexaggerate it.

  4. I FALL IN LOVE WITH CHRIS WU SO ITRY TO WATCH THIS DRAMA AFTER A READ ABOUT IT AFTER IWATCH EP 1 , ITHINK THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG THIS DRAMA SO GOOD BUT THERE IS SOMETHING MISSING BUT KIMI HSIA FOR HIS FIRST LEAD ROLE SO GOOD MAKES ME SMILE LOL SHE SO CUTE AND ILOVE HER HYPER BUBBLY WEIRD BUT SHE DESERVE FULL MARK IN THIS EP CHIRS WU GOOD BUT IN HIS NEW ROLE LOOK WEIRD IALWAYS LOVE HIM WHEN HE IS CUTE AND LOVELY ANYWAY ISTILL WATCH THIS DRAMA FOR CHRIS AND KIM

  5. Glad to see him with the vibe of the heart-of-brother, down-to-earth guy with the easy going personality again. watching it though, that was just the “rocker” music-soul side of him. there’s still traces of the irrevocably popular germaphobe, totally beta, male character that comes with being a face of the famous (and asian).

still i anticipate. she was an old(wayside) longing to watch as the lead face. not too fond of the “falling from grace” skit as i am of the “overall underdog” but i agree, that first video is eye-drawing beautiful. i want her wardrobe (green jackets are love) haha…

as for the bubbly, maybe asian actresses are so naturally muted in their expression that directors demand the attitude as a sort of outstanding statement? overly eager or overly enthusiastic female leads are a dime a dozen in taiwan-land along with exaggerated overacting..

    • I doubt that the overacting is encouraged by the director…but the heroine characters are probably written in such a way that they’re interpreted as super super bubbly?

    • I checked out the first couple episodes, but I decided not to continue with the drama. 😥 There are reviews of the drama on Dramapot and Obsessions of Line though. 😉
